Wow!  The honours just keep rolling in.  I recently received a very cool email from The Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence.  They received funding from the Avon Foundation to provide 3500 books about abuse to libraries, and this year, Painting Caitlyn is one of the five books they’ll be donating.

Hooray, hooray!  Some organizations give awards as soon as a book is published, and others take their time, so they can choose the best.  In this happy case, The International Reading Association has named Painting Caitlyn to its 2008 Teen Choices list.   This is a special honour (hey my American friends—that’s not a typo—it’s Canadian for honor) because it is another reader-selected award.

KLIATT, an organization that reviews over 1200 books each year, says:  “Peters draws a realistic and powerful picture of how subtle and confusing abuse in its different forms can be. Caitlyn's struggle to find herself and the strength needed to feel good about who she is and how she fits into the different pictures of her life will stay with readers long after the book is closed. With nothing too graphic, this would be a title that public and school librarians alike should purchase and add to any subject booklist focusing on raising awareness of dating abuse.”  You can read the full review by clicking here onto the Barnes and Noble website

Teensreadtoo.com gives Painting Caitlyn Five Stars, and says “Teen feelings of being alive and loved, truly loved, for the first time, mixed with the uncertainty, stubbornness, and incredibly strong desire to please, are vividly portrayed in this debut novel. Kimberly Joy Peters does a beautiful job of immersing the reader in the heady feeling of young love. “

In November 2007, I had the privilege of reading to a large audience at J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate in Ajax.  Serendipity took me there, as a student who had discovered Painting Caitlyn on her first ever visit to a public library shared it with a trusted teacher, Jennifer McMullen – who mentioned it to her own mother one night.  Jennifer’s mother is a dear friend of mine, and when she realized they were talking about my book, she contacted me right away to book an appearance.  I am so proud to be the author who turned Jacquie on to reading!
